ABOUT SUZANNEAs a north country native and firm believer in all citizens and their prosperity, I, Suzanne Fiacco, am proud to cast my name and commitment for filling the seat for St. Lawrence County Legislator for District 11.
Living and working in the north country has afforded me the opportunity to connect to the needs and wants of the families of the north country and to understand the businesses that provide jobs to those living in this great upstate NY. It is with this focus that I hope to bring opportunities to families of the north country. Growing up in Norwood to parents having eleven children, I learned first and foremost how to share, be respectful of the others, and work. I learned teamwork throughout my childhood and into adulthood, by my participation in team sports of softball, soccer, and hockey. My involvement in sports continued as I pursued my education at St Lawrence University where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics, and Master of Education in General Studies. While at St Lawrence, I had, not only, outstanding educational experiences, but was also a member of the Women's Ice Hockey team, which together with my teammates enabled me to score the first Goal in the inaugural Frozen Four NCAA games in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Due to this team work I was honored with induction into the St Lawrence University Athletic Hall of Fame. While this won me many accolades as well as my teammates, it was the teamwork and belief in education and sports for children that kept me involved in Girls’ Ice Hockey. I continued to work through the Empire Games and was chosen to coach the Girls Ice Hockey for the Adirondack Region at the Empire State Games in 2003-2005. I continued to also work in my family’s business. Here I learned what is involved in running a business, benefits for its employees, and the costs of a business. I also learned the value of unions and reliance on unions to bargain for the health and welfare of its workers and at the sametime wages which in turn support a community and the benefits of a community. With these experiences, I have expanded my understanding of one of the largest businesses in any community, the school. I presently serve on the Norwood Norfolk Central School Board of Education, where policies promote the best possible educational opportunities for students as well as safeguard the environment for all employed by the district. With the school I am presently employed, Colton Pierrepont Central School, I have served on the executive committee as a union representative. Each day is a constant learning in progress. Working as a team of professionals is important to bringing about the best educational experiences for all students, realizing the goal of not just the day to day learning, but the goal of lifelong learning and active citizenship. All of these experiences, both past and present, have afforded me an understanding of teamwork and what it means to any community, from the tiniest unit, the family, to the school community, and our local communities. It is with these values that I have witnessed and been a part of that will make me a valuable candidate - one open to listening and learning, in search of solutions to the needs of its citizens and the development of sustaining and responsible working environments that will promote the prosperity of our community. Vote, November 3, 2020, a day all citizens can make a difference. |
